Go Red for Women

Thursday, February 23, 2017

TODAY, heart disease is STILL the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. But we can change that because 80% of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. TODAY, Make It Your Mission to learn how to stop this killer, and then tell 5 women you love you want them to live. When it comes to beating heart disease and stroke, change can be the cure.

Paola Sofía “Lola” Montilla was born in Puerto Rico with Ebstein’s Anomaly, a rare congenital heart defect which accounts for less than 1% of congenital heart diseases. She was diagnosed prior to being born, and while asymptomatic for many years, at the age of 12, due to illness related complications, she underwent open-heart surgery. Surgery was successful, and Lola made it her life mission to create awareness about congenital heart defects, as well as inspire others to overcome adversity, and redefine “beauty” through strength, self-assurance and optimism. She is currently an active lobbyist for mandatory newborn pulse oximetry screening in Puerto Rico.
